Movie Night - Update

Just a few updates about Movie Night on Friday, January 2nd.  I will need a final count by 6:00 PM on January 1st, so if you scout is planning on attending and you have not emailed me, please let me know by the 1st.  Also, if your scout is attending, please be aware that they will need sleeping bags and pillows, and an air mattress or mat, as they will be sleeping on the floor of the Parish Hall.

Also, we are asking that the scouts that attend please bring a dessert - all the other food will be provided by the Troop.

Movie Night - January 2nd

The Troop's annual Movie Night will be held on Friday, January 2nd at the Parish Hall.  This is a sleepover event.  Arrival time is 6:00 PM, and dinner will be served at 6:45 PM.  We are in need of a few leaders to help out at this event (including ones who can sleeping over).  Pickup time on Saturday morning is 7:00 AM SHARP - no exceptions - as the church has an event in the hall.

Reminder - Overnight Camping Tomorrow

Hope everyone enjoyed Christmas!  Just a reminder, if you plan on attending the overnight at Camp Norse tomorrow night - I need to know by 4:00 PM today.  I have already received a few confirmations.  If you need more information about this camp out, please refer to the December 22nd entry about it.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from Scoutmaster Lamoureux and all the leadership of Troop 20!  

There are two events being held over the next couple of weeks.  On Saturday, December 27th, there will be a camp out at Magee Cabin at Camp Norse.  Drop off will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning, and pickup will be by 8:00 AM on Sunday, December 28th.  If your scout plans on attending, please email me BY DECEMBER 26th at castlebeckons@gmail.com for food planning purposes.

Also, there will be a Sleepover/Movie Night at Parish Hall on Friday, January 2nd.  Drop off time will be between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on January 2nd, and pickup will be NO LATER THAN 6:00 AM on January 3rd.

There will be more updates and reminders on these events later in the week.

Auto Mechanics Merit Badge - Important!

Good Morning - Happy Monday! 

Just a few reminders to start the week.  There will be a Committee meeting this Thursday, December 11th at 6:00 PM at the Parish Hall, followed by a Troop meeting at 7:00 PM.  Also, if you attended Cranboree and have not paid, please bring $10.00 to this week's meeting.

As you can see from the photo above, in addition to being Scoutmaster and a fire fighter, Mr. Lamoureux also is one of Santa's helpers. He gave him a ride to "Christmas on the Common" in Bridgewater yesterday on Engine 3.  He will be reporting back to Santa on who is naughty and who is nice . . . so please be on your best behavior!

Info for CPR Class Tomorrow

The CPR class tomorrow will be held at Burnell Hall, Room 132A at Bridgewater State University. Burnell Hall is located at 66 Hooper Street in Bridgewater.  A campus map can be accessed here - Burnell Hall is #27.  There is a parking lot in front of the building.

Hooper Street can be reached by traveling down Route 104 East (bear right onto Route 104 after going through Bridgewater Center).  Follow Route 104 - turn right onto Burrill Avenue which is immediately after the railroad tracks.  Hooper Street will be your first left and Burnell Hall will be on the right.

Start time for the class is 9:00 AM.

Volunteers Needed - Eagle Project

On Friday, November 28th, Caleb Savard will be working on his Eagle Project at the Wappanuket Cemetery in Lakeville.  If you have some free time, he would appreciate any help you can give him.  There will be two shifts - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and 12:00 PM until dark.  Come for a few hours or the entire day!

Please bring safety glasses and work gloves (there is some poison ivy at the location, so work gloves are essential).  Also, if you are able to bring rakes, shovels and other tools, that would be helpful.  If any adults have a pole saw, please bring it to help trim some trees.

The cemetery is located at 51 Vaughan Street in Lakeville.  Please click here for a map to the location - Vaughan Street is located off Route 105 in Lakeville.  Here is a photo of the cemetery for reference when looking for it.

Baskets at Food Pantry Tomorrow

Just a reminder, the Food Pantry is looking for volunteers to help fill the Thanksgiving baskets tomorrow night, November 24th at 6:30 PM.  This will be held at the food pantry, which is downstairs from the Parish Hall.

Cranboree & CPR Training

Hope all participants from Fall Cranboree have had time to defrost and rest from the busy weekend!  Even though the temperatures hovered in the 20s and 30s - everyone had a great time!

Also, I need a final count for leader CPR training on December 6th by this Thursday, November 20th.  It is strongly recommended that all leaders participate in this training.  Please email me at castlebeckons@gmail.com by 4:00 PM on Thursday if you are planning on attending this training.

Scouting for Food Update

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the "Scouting for Food" collection on Saturday, November 8th.  Mr. Cunningham received the following from Mr. Amber at the Sacred Heath food pantry:

"The tremendous amount of food they were able to collect was certainly welcomed by us and especially by those who are forced by necessity to utilize the food pantry.

We are currently providing assistance to almost 500 needy families every month, and last year we distributed almost 700,000 pounds of food from the pantry to those in need of a helping hand.

This year we are also preparing to purchase, box, and distribute complete holiday meals for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We expect to exceed 800 holiday meals in addition to the regular pantry visits.

The food items collected by the scouts will certainly be welcomed by those needing a little help."

The food pantry is looking for volunteers to help fill the boxes that are going to be distributed for Thanksgiving.  The boxes will be filled on Monday, November 24th at the food pantry at the Parish Hall.   Please check back for a time for this if you are able to give a little time to help!

CPR Class on December 6th

There will be a CPR class for parents and leaders on Saturday, December 6th.  All current leaders are strongly urged to have current CPR certification.  The class will be at either the Parish Hall or the Fr. Cranboree Campout

This weekend (November 14th - November 16th) is Annawon Council Fall Cranboree at Camp Norse.  Drop off will be at Camp Norse from 5:30 PM on Friday night.  Dinner is not provided, so please be sure your scout eats dinner before arrival.  The forecast for the weekend is predicting chilly weather!  As of now, the forecast calls for a high temperature on Saturday of 38 degrees.  IT WILL BE COLD!   PLEASE COME FULLY PREPARED - BRING A SLEEPING BAG THAT IS RATED FOR COLD WEATHER!  ALSO BRING PLENTY OF WARM CLOTHES, INCLUDING HATS, GLOVES/MITTENS AND PROPER WARM FOOTWEAR.  Also, dressing in layers helps keep out the cold, so bring extra sweatshirts, long sleeved t-shirts and thermals for the night time hours.

Please pickup your scout promptly at 8:00 AM on Sunday morning.

Tomorrow is the Middleborough Veterans' Day Parade.  Please meet in the rear parking lot of Town Hall NO LATER than 9:30 AM in full Class A uniform.

Please don't forget to pick up your "Scouting for Food" donation bags this Saturday, November 8th by 9:00 AM.  The donations should be taken to the Hannaford parking lot in Middleborough, where they will be collected.

A Few Updates . . .

November 14th - 16th is the Fall Cranboree at Camp Norse.  Signups will be at this week's meeting, which will be at the Parish Hall at 7:00 PM.

Scrap Metal Recycling - This Saturday!

This Saturday, November 1st, the Troop will be collecting scrap metal.  These items will be recycled for money . . . and all funds raised will go to the Troop.

Below is link to a flyer that contains details regarding what metal items are accepted, and the contact numbers to have metal scheduled to be picked up.  Please feel free to print the flyer and distribute it at your place of employment or around Middleborough - that would be very helpful!

Hike - Sunday, October 19th

There will be a hike this Sunday, October 19th at the Morgan property.  Start time will be 12:00 PM.  Please meet in the parking lot and be sure to bring the following:

Plenty of water

Trail snacks

Comfortable walking shoes/boots

Bug spray (for ticks)

Hat

Weather appropriate clothing

The hike will be approximately 5 miles long - we anticipating finishing and being back in the parking lot by 2:00 PM.

The Morgan Property is located off of Marion Road.  The directions from Town Hall are:

South Main Street to Route 28.
Left on Route 28 for 2 miles
Right onto Cherry Street for 1 mile
Left onto Marion Road for 3 1/2 miles
Right onto Long Point Road for 1/4 mile

The parking area is on the right.  A link for a map to the intersection of Marion Road and Long Point Road is here.  The photo at the top of this entry is of the parking lot, which will be on your right, 1/4 of a mile down after you turn onto Long Point Road.

Scrap Metal Fundraiser

As many of you know, the Troop collects scrap metal in a fundraising effort.  There will be a scrap metal collection on Saturday, November 1st.  If you have any unwanted metal, please let us know.  Times for pickups will be scheduled - please check with local family members to see if they have anything they would like to donate.

REMINDER - Tonight

Just a reminder that there is not a regular Troop meeting tonight, as we will be meeting at Carabiner's in New Bedford at 7:00 PM.  No Class A uniforms - Class B shirts or regular, comfortable clothes.  The cost is $10.00 per scout, and the registration form must be completed and brought with you.  If you need the form or directions, please see this entry.

Meeting This Week at Carabiner's

There will not be a regular Troop meeting this week because the Parish Hall is being used.  Instead, we will be meeting at Carabiner's in New Bedford on Thursday, October 16th at 7:00 PM for rock wall climbing.  If you have not begun the Climbing merit badge, this is a great opportunity to get started!  For those who have only a few requirements left, you can work on finishing.

Eagle Project - Help Needed

On Saturday, October 18th, Connor Gilson will again be working on his Eagle Project at Middleborough High School.  He will need some volunteers to help him cleaning up the cross country trail.  There will be two shifts - from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.  Please try to come by and lend a hand!  Lunch and water will be provided.  The track is located at the behind the high school.  Unlike last time, please enter the trail from the opposite end (not near the track - please park near the gym.  The entrance is near the backstop of the baseball field.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the water station for the Food Pantry 5K this morning!  It was an warm morning, and the runners/walkers really needed the hydration!  Thanks!!

Webelos Woods

This weekend is Webelos Woods at Camp Norse.  If you are attending, arrival time is 5:00 PM.  Our campsite is Kolli, which is Site #8 on the Camp Norse Map.  Please be sure participants eat dinner before they arrive on Friday night.

If you plan on arriving on Friday night, drop off is at 6:00 PM at the main parking lot.  You can also arrive on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM.  Attached is a suggested packing list if you are unsure of what to bring.

Aside from the Troop Trailer, vehicles are not to be driven to the campsite.  Personal gear needs to be packed in and out.  Parking in the main Norse lot only.

Food Pantry 5K / Water Station

The St. Vincent dePaul Society/Sacred Heart Food Pantry is holding its annual 5K on Sunday, September 28th at 10:00 AM.  They have asked the Troop for volunteers to man a water station along the route, but because that is Webelos Woods weekend, it will be difficult for any scouts to volunteer.  It is a time commitment of two to three hours starting around 9:00 AM, and would be a great way to give back to the Troop's sponsor, Sacred Heart Church.

If any parent or family member would like to volunteer to help in this event, I need to have signed waivers from volunteers before the event.  Please contact me (Mrs. Melchin) at castlebeckons@gmail.com or (508) 631-9194 if you would like to help!
