Hike this Saturday, February 17th - 9:00am at the Morgan Property

Hello Troop 20!

We are planning a hike this Saturday, February 17th at the Stuart Morgan Property.  Please plan to meet at the Morgan Property parking lot at 8:45am.  We'll be stepping off at 9:00am.  Remember to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes, have a day pack with water and snacks, dress for the weather (temperatures will be falling overnight), and have your scout ten essentials.

This will be the first of many conditioning hikes for our Scouts attending West Point.  It's also a great opportunity for any Scouts in need of a 5-miler for rank or just a great time for our newest Scouts to come out and join us on one of the many hikes our Troop does throughout the year.

For anyone who has never been here before, the Morgan Property is located on Long Point Road, off of Marion Road.

There are parking areas located on both sides of the road.  A map to the intersection of Marion Road and Long Point Road can be found at this link.  The parking areas are located about 1/4 mile down, after you turn onto Long Point Road.

West Point Camporee Update

Hello Troop 20!

West Point Scoutmasters' Council - 2018

This is the first of a number of updates that we will be providing regarding the upcoming West Point Camporee.  Mr. Devine has assembled a couple of very informational documents that we will keep updated in the coming weeks.  As we firm up various plans and details, we will push that information out to everyone via the blog.

Below are links to those documents.  The first is an equipment list which provides guidance as to what gear a scout will need to have with them, recommendations regarding pack weight, and some very useful links when looking for gear and information.  The leaders will also be starting regular meetings with the scouts, during our troop meetings, where we will cover equipment to make sure everyone understands what is appropriate gear and what isn't.  We would encourage parents who are not sure about gear themselves, to consider participating in some of these meetings so you understand what we mean when talk about appropriate backpacking gear.

The second document contains information about the event, contacts, agenda's, what to bring, information about food, etc.  It also has some great links that provide information about backpacking and food.  You will notice that some of the info is very high level or TBD but these will firm up over the coming weeks and we will update as appropriate.

Required Equipment

West Point Trip Information

IMPORTANT:  The leaders of Troop 20 encourage every scout to participate in these trips but parents need to be involved to help your scout decide if it's appropriate for their age, abilities, and resources.  This trip has a $25 registration fee which is non-refundable.  That policy has nothing to do with Troop 20 or the BSA.  It is a West Point Academy policy.  So, if during the shake down and conditioning treks that will be coming up, the leaders of Troop 20 decide that this event looks to be out of reach for your scouts abilities at this point in their scouting career, we will unfortunately have to make the decision that they cannot attend and the $25 will be forfeited.  That decision will not be made lightly and has the safety of all scouts first and foremost in mind.

We look forward to making this an exciting and fun trip for all scouts who participate and there will be a lot more information forthcoming as it gets rolled out to us, so please keep an eye on the blog for updates!!

If any parents would like to discuss the trip with the leaders, please see us at any Troop meeting and we would be happy to assist in any way we can.

Thank You!!

Offsite Troop Meeting this Thursday, 2/8, at 6:30pm. Round One Bowling - Silver City Galleria

Hello Troop 20!

We have a few announcements for the week:

1) Offsite - We will be offsite this week for our Troop Meeting at Round One bowling, located at the Silver City Galleria in Taunton.  We will meet at Round One for 6:30pm.  The cost is $15 cash per Scout which will cover two games of bowling and shoes.  Please arrange to have dinner before arriving as we will not be eating as a group this time.  Pickup will be 8:00pm at Round One.

2) Blue Cards - If anyone has a blue card for Mrs. Grady, you need to bring it Thursday night or make arrangements to get it to her before hand.  If you have a blue card and will not be at bowling Thursday, please reach out to Mrs. Grady at grady37@verizon.net.

3) Red & Green - Our Red & Green dinner and Winter Court of Honor will be held next Thursday, February 15th.
Eric Grady has a signup sheet available.  Please follow the link below to indicate how many people from your family will be attending and what you plan to bring for the potluck dinner.

Approximate time table is as follows:
6:00 to 6:30 - Scouts arrive to help setup
7:00 - Dinner
7:30 - Court of Honor
8:15 - Cake and Cleanup

As this is a court of honor, please remember to be in full class A uniform, including sash if you have one.

4) West Point Camporee, April 27 thru 29 - We have been accepted to attend this years camporee at West Point Military Academy!!  This is a really fun event that we don't always get to participate in but we were accepted to attend this year and if you talk to the older scouts who have been before, they'll tell you what a great time this is.  This year, we will be attending as "Lightfighter", which means we backpack everything in and out.  Sleeping bag, tent, food,......everything.  West Point provides portable latrines for the weekend.  We need to know ASAP how many scouts plan to attend because we need to have headcount and money sent to West Point by Feb 14, which is only a week away.

The cost will be $25 per scout and adult which covers your registration, Camporee patch, and lightfighter patch.  This is a non-refundable fee so if you back out at the last minute, you do not get a refund.  But we can't imagine why anyone would back out!! Additional funds may be needed to cover expenses to get to West Point, spending money, etc.  We will advise on that in the weeks to come but we need the $25 registration fee ASAP.  Please bring this with you to bowling on Thursday or get in touch with one of the leaders to make arrangements to get the money to us.  This is urgent if you wish to attend!!

For all scouts that will be attending, we will be starting some planning sessions to go over equipment you'll need, food for backpacking, and shake down hikes to make sure we're good to go.  We hope everyone will participate in this very special event.

Look for more details in the coming days/weeks.

That's all for now....We hope to see a lot of scouts at bowling!!
