West Point Camporee Update

Hello Troop 20!

West Point Scoutmasters' Council - 2018

This is the first of a number of updates that we will be providing regarding the upcoming West Point Camporee.  Mr. Devine has assembled a couple of very informational documents that we will keep updated in the coming weeks.  As we firm up various plans and details, we will push that information out to everyone via the blog.

Below are links to those documents.  The first is an equipment list which provides guidance as to what gear a scout will need to have with them, recommendations regarding pack weight, and some very useful links when looking for gear and information.  The leaders will also be starting regular meetings with the scouts, during our troop meetings, where we will cover equipment to make sure everyone understands what is appropriate gear and what isn't.  We would encourage parents who are not sure about gear themselves, to consider participating in some of these meetings so you understand what we mean when talk about appropriate backpacking gear.

The second document contains information about the event, contacts, agenda's, what to bring, information about food, etc.  It also has some great links that provide information about backpacking and food.  You will notice that some of the info is very high level or TBD but these will firm up over the coming weeks and we will update as appropriate.

West Point Trip Information

IMPORTANT:  The leaders of Troop 20 encourage every scout to participate in these trips but parents need to be involved to help your scout decide if it's appropriate for their age, abilities, and resources.  This trip has a $25 registration fee which is non-refundable.  That policy has nothing to do with Troop 20 or the BSA.  It is a West Point Academy policy.  So, if during the shake down and conditioning treks that will be coming up, the leaders of Troop 20 decide that this event looks to be out of reach for your scouts abilities at this point in their scouting career, we will unfortunately have to make the decision that they cannot attend and the $25 will be forfeited.  That decision will not be made lightly and has the safety of all scouts first and foremost in mind.

We look forward to making this an exciting and fun trip for all scouts who participate and there will be a lot more information forthcoming as it gets rolled out to us, so please keep an eye on the blog for updates!!

If any parents would like to discuss the trip with the leaders, please see us at any Troop meeting and we would be happy to assist in any way we can.

Thank You!!
