"Scouting for Food" Door Hanger Dropoff Tomorrow
Tomorrow, October 26th, is the first part of the "Scouting for Food" program. Please leave the door hangers on as many homes as possible in your area (and note where you leave them, so you remember where to return to on November 2nd!). Class A uniforms should be worn for both door hanger drop off and donation pickup.
The Sacred Heart Food Pantry has given us a list of suggested items that they are in need of - it may be helpful to either write a few of them as suggestions on the door hangers, or attach a printed list, but please emphasize that all donations are welcomed! If you have access to a printer, I am attaching the list to make it easier if you want to attach it to the door hangers.
The suggestions are:
Pancake mix
Pancake syrup
Chef Boy R Dee products
Hamburger or Tuna Helper
Any type of dry meals
Microwave meals
Crushed pineapple
Boxed pasta (not spaghetti or elbows)
Ketchup
Ramen noodles
Baked beans
Jello

Scouting for Food 2013
This year Troop 20 will be participating in the "Scouting for Food" campaign. The Boy Scouts of America started the Scouting for Food program in 1985, and has collected over 43 million items to supply food banks across America. The donations that we receive for Troop 20 will be distributed to the St. Vincent dePaul Society, which oversees the food pantry at Sacred Heart Church, our troop's sponsor organization. It is our hope that we will be able to fill a truck with our donations!
On October 24th (this coming Thursday night), we will have door hangers that explain the collection process available for scouts to take and distribute to as many homes as possible in nearby neighborhoods. These door hangers will be left at residences on Saturday, October 26th. The scouts will then return on Saturday, November 2nd to pick up donated items.
For more information on this program, please visit the Scouting for Food/Eastern Massachusetts website: :
We would like as many scouts as possible to participate in this program, as it is a great way to make a difference in our local community. Class A uniforms should be worn for both door hanger drop off and donation pickup.
Don't forget to pick up your door hangers after Court of Honor this Thursday, October 24th! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask after the Court of Honor.
Thank you!

Sacred Heart Food Pantry 5K / Parent Volunteers Needed
The St. Vincent dePaul Society/Sacred Heart Food Pantry is holding its annual 5K on Sunday, September 29th at 10:00 AM. They have asked the Troop for volunteers to man a water station along the route, but because that is Webelos Woods weekend, it will be difficult for any scouts to volunteer. It is a time commitment of two to three hours starting around 9:00 AM, and would be a great way to give back to the Troop's sponsor, Sacred Heart Church.
If any parent or family member would like to volunteer to help in this event, please contact Kathy Melchin at castlebeckons@gmail.com or (508) 631-9194.
Thank you!

Mosquito Netting
Most veteran scouts of Hidden Valley / Camp Bell have Mosquito Netting already. Be sure to bring with you to Squanto
New to summer camp scouts: We believe the tents at Squanto do not have any bug netting. To be prepared, you will need to pack in Mosquito Netting (sample packaging image above). Can be purchased at sporting goods stores such as Dick's for a few bucks.

Help Needed
The Middleboro Historical Association has once again asked if our Troop can assist them with their annual Ice Cream Sundae Social Fundraiser. It will be on Sunday, July 21st at the museum grounds (next to Pierce Playground) They will need help at the beginning to set up tents, tables and chairs, later druing the event to help with games with the kids, and then finally afterwards to help break down. You can help at just one of those times or all 3 if you're able. I don't have the exact times yet, but probably set up will be early, the event goes on in the afternoon. Please, I would like to see some new faces helping this year, since we have so many new scouts!
I will be thee doing twisty balloons, but will be bringing some games for the kids. Any scout (or family members as well!) who can help please contact me directly at 508-496-8654. Thanks in advance, and I believe those who help can get a free sundae.
Sincerely, Mike McKeon

Our Camping Role Model
Our Camping role model of what to do after a great Campout
As you can see from the photo Connor has built the tent at home to allow it to dry out after the Campout
While doing so he has also checked
- to make sure the were no rips or tears in the tent or fly
- all the poles were in good shape with no broken ends or snapped elastics
- all the zippers on the tent doors and windows were in proper working order
- he had all the tent pegs (how many are needed will be the Court of Honor question)
- the tent bag, pole bag, and tent peg bags all had the same tent identification number as the tent
- all the leaves, pine needles and dirt were removed from the interior of the tent
Any problems he would have noted on paper and placed in the top of the tent bag to be brought to the troop meeting the following Thursday along with the dry and properly folded ground cloth.
The Quartermaster will keep a record of any repairs need from this information so no scout goes on a campout with a broken tent.
These simple steps will keep our Camping gear in Tip Top shape and help the Quartermaster do his job.

Camporee Catapult build
As you know, this Thursday we will need to meet at an alternate site.
Nathan's Dad, Mr Thorson has agreed to host the troop meeting at his business, plans are to build a catapult for this weekend's Camporee competition.
Thank You Thorsons
125 Fireworks Circle Suite #1Bridgewater, MA
Some of the work will need to take place outside, so to take advantage of as much daylight hours we will begin at 6:30. Please bring a safety goggles, work gloves, a hammer if you have one. Judging will be both on distance that the catapult can hurl a softball as well as how "scout-like" the design, such as proper knots and lashings, decoration, etc. If you have some ideas, bring them with you.
We will also be discussing plans for the weekend as there are other competitions, such as cooking, fire building, etc.
If you plan to be at camporee, plan to be at Thursday's meeting.
